Aim Bryophytes exhibit apparently low rates of endemism in Macaronesia and differ from angiosperms in their diversity patterns by the widespread occurrence of endemics within and among archipelagos. This paper investigates the phylogeography of the leafy liverwort Radula lindenbergiana to determine: (1) whether or not morphologically cryptic diversification has occurred in Macaronesia, and (2) the relationships between Macaronesian and continental populations. Location Macaronesia, Europe, Africa. Methods Eighty‐four samples were collected across the species’ distribution range and sequenced at four chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) loci (atpB–rbcL, trnG, trnL and rps4). Phylogenetic reconstructions and Bayesian ancestral area reconstructions were used in combination with population genetics statistics (H, NST, FST) to describe the pattern of present genetic diversity in R. lindenbergiana and infer its biogeographic history. Results Patterns of genetic diversity in R. lindenbergiana exhibit a striking westwards gradient, wherein haplotype (0.90) and nucleotide (0.0038 ± 0.0019) diversity peak in Macaronesia, with a substantial endemic component. We found 20.9% of the genetic variance between biogeographic regions, and most pairwise FST comparisons between regions are significantly different from zero. The global NST (0.78) is significantly higher than the global FST (0.20), providing evidence for the presence of phylogeographic signal in the data. Ancestral area reconstructions suggest that the haplotypes currently found in western Europe share a Macaronesian common ancestor. Main conclusions The haplotype diversification exhibited by R. lindenbergiana in Macaronesia is comparable to that reported for many angiosperm groups at the species level. The apparent lack of radiation among Macaronesian bryophytes may thus reflect the reduced morphology of bryophytes in comparison with angiosperms. The high diversity found among Macaronesian haplotypes, especially in Madeira and the Canary Islands, and the significant NST/FST ratio between Macaronesia and all the other biogeographic regions (an indication that mutation rate exceeds dispersal rates) suggest that Macaronesian archipelagos could have served as a refugium during the Quaternary glaciations. Many haplotypes currently found in Europe share a Macaronesian common ancestor, and this further suggests that Macaronesia might have played a key role in the back‐colonization of the continent.  相似文献

A single treatment with lidocaine(2-Diethylamino-N-[2,6-dimethylphenyl]-acetamide) – a potent localanaesthetic(LA), caused significant and extensive inhibition of epiphyllous buddifferentiation in Kalanchoe pinnata, in a long –term irreversible manner. These effects were both concentration and treatmentduration dependent, with either variant generating similar and additiveeffects. The growth responses studied had differential sensitivity towards the applieddosage of the anaesthetic. Lidocaine also appears to influence expression oftheorganogenic potential of buds since for all inhibitory doses a significantpercentage produced shoots but not roots.  相似文献

Oil bodies of liverworts are intracellular organelles bounded by a single unit membrane containing lipophilic globules suspended in a proteinaceous matrix. They are a prominent and highly distinctive organelle uniquely found in liverworts. Although they have been widely used in taxonomy and chemosystematics, and many of their secondary metabolites are known to be bioactive and are considered as potential sources of medicines, their origin, development and function still remain poorly understood. Recently, biochemical studies have indicated that the isoprenoid biosynthetic pathways in liverworts are similar to those of the seed plants and that oil bodies of Marchantia polymorpha contain a protein complex immunologically related to plastid and cytosolic enzymes of isoprenoid synthesis. Cytoplasmic lipid droplets lacking a bounding membrane have recently been recognized as important dynamic organelles playing active roles in cell physiology. Structural proteins, covering the surface of the lipid droplets and preventing them coalescing during desiccation, have been found in seed plants and also in the moss Physcomitrella patens. However, whether liverwort oil bodies play a dynamic role in cell metabolism, in addition to their role as sites of essential oil accumulation and sequestration, has not been formally tested. In this review, we present current knowledge on the oil bodies of liverworts on their origin and development, their role in taxonomy, chemosystematics and potential pharmaceutical applications leading to their functional significance, and we also identify avenues for future studies on this important but long-overlooked organelle.  相似文献

Three new fossil bryophytes are described from Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous deposits of the Transbaikalia region of Russia. The complex thalloid hepatic Khasurtythallus monosolenioides gen. et sp. nov. belongs to the Marchantiidae, but its combination of characters precludes unequivocal placement in any of the five orders of this subclass, representing most likely an extinct lineage. Paleaethallus squarrosus gen. et sp. nov. is a thalloid plant with scales similar to those of complex thalloid hepatics, although their arrangement and the overall plant structure has little in common with any extant hepatics. Dispersed moss capsules, three of which have attached calyptrae, are described as a form genus Kulindobryum gen. nov. Despite incomplete preservation, some rare characters indicate possible relationship to the genus Tayloria of the Splachnaceae, an extant family of mosses adapted to grow on animal dung, dead bodies and bones. Notably, Kulindobryum co‐occurs with bones of the small feathered dinosaurs Kulindadromeus, which also supports an affiliation of Kulindobryum with the Splachnaceae. The most common and best known Mesozoic moss for the region, the genus Bryokhutuliinia, is appraised for its systematic position and probable affinities with the Dicranales. A scoring approach is introduced for the comparative method of taxonomic placement of fossils with partial suites of morphological characters at the family or order level.  相似文献

A series of fatty acid ethyl esters ranging from C14 to C24 was isolated from a hexane extract of the liverwort Conocephalum conicum, these esters accounted for 77% of the extract. The ethyl esters consisting of even-numbered fatty acids were predominant and ethyl palmitate was the major constituent.  相似文献

Abstract

Scotland’s mountains are home to a rare and unique liverwort community, ‘the oceanic-montane liverwort-rich heath’, but its component species are absent from regions where they could potentially thrive. Many biological characteristics of these species are unknown, making it impossible to explain the reasons for their rarity; however, they have not been observed to produce sporophytes within Britain. We use ex situ cultivation of whole liverworts and fragments, and in situ cultivation of fragments, to assess the growth rate and the potential for vegetative reproduction of several species. Most of the species grew from both fragments and as whole plants, indicating that the rarity of the liverwort heath is not due to poor powers of regeneration. We propose that growth rate and the potential to regenerate from fragments are important factors structuring the liverwort heath community, at least locally. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that there is potential for ex situ conservation of rare liverwort species, in situ enhancement of existing populations, and creation of new ones.  相似文献

The degree of racemization in the several activated ester methods of the peptide synthesis was measured in using the critical racemization test, Pro-Val+Pro, with help of gas chromatography. The results were compared with that in the coupling reaction, Leu-Phe+Val, in which no racemization had been reported in the corresponding reaction conditions by F. Weygand et al., when the activated dipeptide esters had been prepared from Z-Leu+Phe-activated esters. The significantly higher racemization was observed in the methods of N-hydroxypiperidine ester and thiophenyl ester, even when the activated dipeptide esters were prepared from Z-Pro+Val-activated esters. On the other hand, almost no racemization was observed in the N-hydroxysuccinimide ester and p-nitrophenyl ester methods. A great extent of the racemization was detected when the activated dipeptide esters were prepared directly from Z-Pro-Val-OH.  相似文献
